The station square
The train arrived in Massa in 1862, when the town was connected to the Tuscan rail network. The Railway Society of Livorno obtained the concession to build the line linking up Pisa with Massa. The tracks reached Viareggio on April 15th 1861, Pietrasanta on December 12th, Seravezza in February 1862 and Massa on November 1st 1862. In the following spring the line Massa - Sarzana was opened, but one more year was necessary to link up the Tuscan rail network with La Spezia.
The train produced remarkable advantages: to reach Pisa by train it took the people of Massa only one hour and forty minutes against the five hours necessary to stage-coach; Sarzana could be reached in half an hour and La Spezia in one hour and a quarter.
The station square is probably the largest of the town. It owes its name to its collocation, in front of the railway station. It has a particular marble paving and is adorned by a vegetation with palm trees and arboreal flower-beds.
